Four rooms above the Teesta at Burmaik, Kalimpong — where the third-highest mountain on earth turns gold before your morning tea does.
Burmaik sits on the Kalimpong side of the Teesta, high enough that the river reads as a slow silver line below and low enough that the garden still flowers in December. The house holds four rooms. Three look straight at Kanchenjunga; the fourth opens onto the valley and the river bend.
There is no reception desk and no restaurant menu. Meals come out of the kitchen when you are hungry, mostly from the garden and the village around it. Evenings are a bonfire, a sky with no light pollution in it, and an early night — because the mountain is worth getting up for.
Rates are per person, per night. ₹1,200 at three or four sharing, ₹1,300 at double occupancy. Meals included.
Don't miss the Sunrise from balcony. Wake up at five
Tickell's Thrush, Crimson-browed Finch, White-browed Scimitar-Babbler, Gray-sided Bush Warbler, Black-faced Warbler, Rufous Woodpecker and Oriental Honey-buzzard.
No town light for miles. On a clear night the Milky Way sits over the same ridgeline the mountain does.
We woke at five for the view and stayed on the deck until breakfast. Nobody hurried us.
Four rooms means you are a guest in a house, not a booking number. The food alone was worth the drive.
The road is a road. What waits at the end of it is the clearest Kanchenjunga we have seen.
Kanchenjunga Valley Retreat is our first house — a small collection is on the way.

October to early January is the most reliable window, and March to May is close behind. Monsoon months are green and dramatic but the mountain hides.

It is a hill road, tarred for most of the way with rough patches near the top. Any car manages it in dry weather; we suggest a local driver in heavy rain.
Yes. All four rooms together sleep fifteen. Groups taking the full house get the kitchen and the bonfire to themselves.
Four rooms fill quickly between October and April. Message us and we will answer the same day.
